Schmitt's Runner-Up Finish Leads Bishops at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Golf team competed at the O'Briant Jensen Memorial Tournament hosted by Guilford College on Monday and Tuesday in Greensboro. 

The men were led by senior captain Frankie Schmitt as he finished alone in 2nd place with scores of 1-under par 70 in round one Monday and a 3-over par 74 in round two for a total of 2-over 144 and two strokes back of the individual medalist, Cooper Hrabak of Methodist who finished at even par with rounds of 68 and 74. Zero golfers shot under par or even par in the tough conditions of the second round Tuesday.

Schmitt posted 3 birdies on the back nine including the final hole of the day as he made a run at the medalist with an even par 35. Schmitt ended up leading all golfers with nine birdies on the week as well.

The men ended up finishing in a tie for 18th place with Shenandoah with a two day score of 658. They shot a 42-over par 326 in round one and then shot a 48-over 332 in round two.

Methodist University won the tournament with a 21-over par 589 with CNU finishing 2nd, and Greensboro 3rd. 

Freshman Juan Pielach then placed 2nd on the Bishops and 97th overall with rounds of 84 and 86 for a 28-over par 170.

Freshmen Matt Coltren and Lucas Perez then each finished tied in 102nd place at 30-over par 172. Perez shot an 89 in round one but improved that by six shots on Tuesday with an 83 while Coltren shot rounds of 83 and 89 as well.

Individually, sophomore Santiago Larumbe then came in 117th place by shooting rounds of 89 and 93 for a 40-over 182. 

This was the final tournament of the fall semester for the Bishops. Be on the lookout for the release of their spring schedule later on this year.
