Golf Finishes 2nd at Marlin Invitational

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College men's golf team had their best finish to a tournament all season on Sunday as they finished 2nd in the 6-team Marlin Invitational hosted by Virginia Wesleyan at Cypress Point CC.

Wesleyan shot rounds of 332 in the first round on Saturday and improved by three strokes to shoot a 329 in the second round Sunday to finish just 10 strokes behind team champion Goucher College's (Md.) team score of 651.

NCWC's 661 score finished ahead of third place rival Averett (Va.) by four shots while the Bishops outdistanced 4th place Marymount (Va.), 5th place Va. Wesleyan, and 6th place Eastern Mennonite (Va.).

Leading the Bishops individually was freshman Myles Patterson with a 6th place finish. Patterson shot the only round inthe 70s for Wesleyan firing a 79 on Sunday and an 83 in the first round to finish with an 18-over 162 final score, finishing just three strokes back of a tie for first place.

Fellow freshman Aidan Harrington then finished in 7th place, two shots back of Patterson, with a score of 20-over 164 after shooting rounds of 84 and 80. Freshman Lucas Perez was then one shot back of Harrington to place 9th with a 165 after rounds of 84 and 81.

Freshman Brycen Swain then placed 17th for the Bishops shooting the best round on Saturday for Wesleyan with an 81 before struggling on Sunday with a 93 for a 174 final score. Junior Augustin Spangenberg then placed 20th in the 30-man field with consecutive rounds of 89 for a 178 total score.

The Bishops will next return to action on April 2-3 for the Hampden-Sydney Invite in Virginia.
