Appelquist Leads Bishops to Win at Piedmont in League Play

Demorest, Ga. - Freshman Anthon Appelquist netted two goals and an assist to lead his Battling Bishop men's soccer team to a 5-2 win at Piedmont College in Saturday's USA South Conference opener.

The match featured five goals in the first 12 minutes of play, beginning with the Lions' Chase Kane's score at 6:03. NCWC freshman Sheriff Secka knotted the match at 1-1 just over a minute later on an assist from Appelquist, only to see Kane put PC back on top with an unassisted score in the 10th minute.

Appelquist proceeded to give NCWC a 3-2 lead at the break with a pair of goals just ten minutes apart (12th, 22nd) off assists by Thorfinnur Thorfinnsson and Drew Wiltse. The Bishops added a pair of insurance goals in the second half on scores by Sebastian Wiiala (from Thorfinnsson) and Caetano Viegas (from Halldor Bjarneyjarson).

The Bishops out-shot the Lions 16-7 on the day. Sophomore keeper Alex Magner picked up his first win of the season in net, making a pair of saves on four shots-on-goal.

The win capped a weekend highlighted by the Bishops' USA South Instagram takeover. To view behind-the-scenes photos and videos of Wesleyan's roadtrip, check out www.instagram.com/USA_South.
