FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Men's Soccer team shut out non-conference opponent Hampden-Sydney College (Va.) 2-0 on Saturday in the Mary Washington Classic for their first win of the season.
The win was also the first career collegiate win for first-year head coach Meir Lewin.
Junior forward Baboucarr Njie got the Bishops on the board first with his unassisted goal in the 26:20 mark of the first half. Fellow forward, sophomore Lorenzo Cocchia, then gave Wesleyan a 2-0 advantage in the 32nd minute of action with his first goal of the season as he shot it past the HSC keeper, who misplayed the ball. Wesleyan would go on to outshoot the Tigers 9-4 in the first half.
Wesleyan (1-1) would also outshoot Hampden-Sydney (0-2) 9-6 in the second half as the Bishop defense and sophomore goalkeeper Tobias Borzel would keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. Borzel would go on to make 5 saves on five shots on goal for the win. Sophomore midfielder Matteo Costa would go on to lead Wesleyan with five total shots in the game as his Bishops shot the ball 18 times.
Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday when they head to Newport News, VA to battle Christopher Newport University at 4 PM.
