Men's Soccer Edge Methodist 2-1 to win East

Fayetteville, NC - The NC Wesleyan College men's soccer team defeated rival Methodist University 2-1 on Saturday to officially win the USA South's East Division with a 12-1 record and enter next week's conference tournament as a top 2 overall seed in the 14-team conference.

Sophomore forward Matteo Costa got the Bishops on the board first with his penalty kick goal in the 4th minute of action.

Sophomore defender Jack Holden then added another goal in the first half, his first of the season in the 37th minute as Wesleyan led 2-0 at the break. NCWC outshot Methodist 16-3 in the first half.

MU then played better in the second half outshooting Wesleyan 8-7 and scoring their only goal inthe 70th minute of play. 

Wesleyan and sophomore goalkeeper Tobias Borzel, though, would hold off Methodist the rest of the way in securing the win and the division title.

Wesleyan improves to 14-2-1 overall while Methodist falls to 4-11-1 and 2-10-1 in the conference.

The top seeded Bishops will next host 4th seeded Mary Baldwin University in the Conference Tournament Quarterfinals next Saturday at 2:00 PM.
