ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - East #2 seed NC Wesleyan College snuck past West third-seed Brevard, 1-0, in overtime in the first round of the 2021 USA South Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday afternoon from Rocky Mount.
Three of the four tournament games on the day were won by the higher-seeded squad. The lone upset of the day came from East Division fourth-seed Averett who clipped West top-seed Maryville, 2-1. In other action, East top-seed William Peace defeated West fourth-seeded Huntingdon, 3-1 while West second-seed Covenant topped East third-seed Greensboro, 3-1.
A scoreless first half between the Bishops and Tornados saw Wesleyan hold just a slim 6-5 lead in shots at the break. The second half was more foul-filled with Wesleyan creating much more of the scoring chances but Brevard's keeper stood tall in making 8 saves on the day.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, NCWC led just 13 -12 in shots. In the first 10-minute overtime period, The Bishops again created 4 legitimate scoring chances while limiting Brevard to zero while controlling the period but coming up just short. Finally a foul by the Tornado keeper on a Bishop forward led to a corner kick by the Bishops with 3 seconds to play. Then, off the corner kick from sophomore midfielder Juan Simoniello, fellow sophomore forward Augustin Rodriguez then punched it in from just outside the net to score the win for the Bishops as time expired.
Freshman goalkeeper Frederick Rogers then finished the day making 7 saves in goal while Rodriguez led with five shots. Wesleyan improves to 8-7-2 while dropping Brevard to 9-4-3.
The semifinal and championship games will be played hosted by William Peace on Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6.
