Fredericksburg, Va. - The Battling Bishop men's tennis team of North Carolina Wesleyan turned in an impressive 6-3 victory over #16 Mary Washington on Friday, only to suffer a 5-4 upset at the hands of #21 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday. Currently ranked #5 in the nation, the Bishops are now 9-2 overall.

Versus UMW, the top-seeded duo of Robert Kjellberg and Alexey Rumyantsev tallied Wesleyan's only point in doubles action with an 8-6 victory. Both went on to earn wins in singles play at the #2 and #3 seeds, thereby securing half of the team's total points.

Rinat Khussainov was also a singles winner at the top seed, earning a straight-set win over the Eagles' Sam Wichlin. Senior Fred Lemongo and freshman Peter Hviid were straight-set winners at the #5 and #6 seeds, respectively, to seal the 6-3 final.

Against CMU, the Bishops fell behind 3-0 after getting swept in doubles play. Both of Wesleyan's losses this season, in fact, have come when NCWC suffered a sweep in either singles or doubles action.

Still, the Bishops almost tallied an improbable come-from-behind win, tying the match at 4-4 with singles wins at #1 (Khussainov), #3 (Rumyantsev), #5 (Lemongo) and #6 (Artsiom Prostak). The Tartans' Chris Heaney-Secord, however, came back from a set down to upset Kjellberg at the 2nd seed (2-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Wesleyan returns to USA South play on Tuesday at Christopher Newport.
