Battling Bishop Men Advance to Sweet 16

Atlanta, Ga. - Behind the stellar play of sophomore Robert Kjellberg, the North Carolina Wesleyan men's tennis team cruised to a dominating 5-1 victory over Whitman College on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. The win sends the Bishops to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and sets up a regional championship match between 19th-ranked Wesleyan and 2nd-ranked Emory on Sunday.

Whitman tallied its lone point with an 8-3 win at #2 doubles to open the match. Kjellberg and Alexey Rumyantsev, however, tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-4 win at the top seed, while Marcelo Prata and Fred Lemongo gave NCWC a 2-1 lead entering singles play with an 8-5 victory at the 3rd slot.

The Bishops proceeded to earn straight-set wins at #2 (Kjellberg), #5 (Lemongo) and #6 (Artsiom Prostak) to secure the 5-1 victory. The Bishops will now enter the regional championship match with a 17-2 overall record, while the host Eagles boast a perfect 21-0 mark on the season.
