NCWC Falls to Emory, Trio of Bishops Advance

Atlanta, Ga. - The North Carolina Wesleyan men's tennis team fell to 2nd-ranked Emory University by a 5-1 score in Sunday afternoon's NCAA regional championship.

The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in doubles action, with the closest match coming at the top seed where Robert Kjellberg and Alexey Rumyantsev fell by an 8-5 score. Kjellberg tallied NCWC's lone point with a straight set win at #2 singles, but the Eagles (21-0) eventually secured the victory with a win at the #4 seed. The loss leaves Wesleyan with a 17-3 record on the year.

While the team's season may have ended in the Sweet 16 for a second straight season, three Bishop players will continue play in the singles and doubles competition of the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships. Rinat Khussainov will compete in singles, and the duo of Kjellberg and Rumyantsev will compete in doubles.

The individual championships consists of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility/availability of student-athletes. The singles and doubles championships will be held May 24-26 at Cary Tennis Park.
