Bishop Tennis Sweeps Averett to Open League Play

Rocky Mount, N.C. - First-year head coach Andres Amores picked up the first wins of his N.C. Wesleyan career on Friday afternoon, leading his Battling Bishop men and women to a sweep of Averett University in the USA South Conference opener for both squads. NCWC cruised to a 9-0 victory on the men's side, while the Bishops were 6-3 winners in women's action.

In the women's match, the Bishops took a 2-1 lead in doubles play as freshman Natalia Lopez made her collegiate debut at the top seed with sophomore Katie Beeman and recorded an 8-0 win.  Also victorious in their first collegiate action were freshmen Neryzza Calo and Leigh Hales, who teamed for an 8-6 win at the 2nd seed.

Lopez, Beeman, Calo and Hales went on to secure singles wins at the #1 through #4 slots, respectively, with Calo clinching the match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the 3rd seed. Lopez and Beeman did not surrender a game in their wins, while Hales took a third-set tiebreak 10-5.

On the men's side, Amores' Bishops officially began their pursuit of a sixth straight conference title with a 9-0 sweep. Wesleyan gave up just five games in doubles play before tallying six straight-set wins in singles action. The victory runs NCWC's regular season winning streak versus USA South competition to 34 matches dating back to the 2008 season.

Wesleyan's men will host an exhibition with Division II West Virginia Wesleyan College on Monday afternoon at 1:00pm. Both teams will be back in action next Friday at 2:30pm when the Bishops host USA South foe Maryville at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
