Wesleyan Tennis Sweeps Ferrum in USA South Play

Ferrum, Va. - The men's and women's tennis teams of North Carolina Wesleyan turned in a USA South sweep of Ferrum College on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Battling Bishop women moved to 2-2 on the season with a 5-2 win over the Panthers, while the NCWC men stayed undefeated in league play with a 9-0 shutout.

In the women's match, freshmen Natalia Lopez and Neryzza Calo teamed for an 8-3 win a #1 doubles, as did sophomores Katie Beeman and Leigh Hales at the #2 seed, 8-6. Lopez continued her stellar play with a straight-set win at #1 singles, securing the victory without surrendering a game. Beeman and Calo followed suit with straight-set wins at the 2nd and 3rd slots.

On the men's side, the Bishops raced out to a 3-0 lead with a doubles sweep and went on to tally five straight-set wins in singles play. Ferrum's closest chance at a point came at #1 singles, but NCWC sophomore Mikhail Konnov would not be denied, dominating the third set 6-1 to seal the sweep.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Greensboro College. The matches are slated to begin at 2:00pm at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center.
