NCWC Men Win Trio of League Matches, Fall to Bates

Rocky Mount, N.C. / Fredericksburg, Va. - The men's tennis team of North Carolina Wesleyan won a trio of USA South matches this week, turning in sweeps of Greensboro, Piedmont and Covenant to remain undefeated in league play. Unfortunately, the Battling Bishops saw their seven-match winning streak come to an end on Sunday with an 8-1 loss to #25 Bates College. Freshman Elias Kerem secured Wesleyan's lone point at #4 singles.

Due to inclement weather, Tuesday's match with Greensboro was moved to the Belmont Lake Indoor Racquet Club adjacent to campus. Wesleyan surrendered just two games in doubles play en route to a 3-0 lead, while junior Peter Hviid and Eduardo Ugalde sealed the 5-0 win with a pair of straight-set wins at #2 and #3 singles.

Friday then saw NCWC earn a 9-0 sweep of Piedmont. The Lions' best chance at a point came at #3 singles, but Ugalde's 10-6 win in the third set secured the sweep. It was more of the same against Covenant on Saturday, with freshman Alex Shirayev picking up the first wins of his career at #3 doubles and #6 singles.

The Bishops (7-4, 7-0 USA South) will travel to Emory University next weekend for a trio of non-conference matches, beginning with Friday's 9:00am tilt with DePauw University.
