ROME, Ga. - The NC Wesleyan College Men's Tennis team competed at the ITA Regionals at Berry College, GA over the weekend and came away with some solid results.
DOUBLES
In the Flight A doubles bracket, the team of juniors Aditya Iyer and Roberto Puig came away with a second place finish going 4-1 on the weekend before falling in the finals in three close sets to the team from Emory University, 4-6, 6-4, 8-10.
The sophomore tandem of Jhonny Acosta and Juan Vallejo also played well as they made the semifinals of the Flight A bracket also before falling to the eventual champs from Emory 8-4. Acosta and Iyer went 3-1 on the weekend.
SINGLES
Wesleyan then had nine players competing in the 64-man Flight A singles draw with three making it all the way to the Quarterfinals.
Iyer made the quarters out of the top bracket winning his first three matches all in straight sets before falling in a tight three-setter to top seed Andres Carro of the University of the South 5-7, 7-6, 0-2 before having to default.
Sophomore Nikita Revin also won his first two matches to make the round of 16 before also falling to Carro in a tight three-setter, 7-5, 2-6, 6-10.
Acosta then also made the quarterfinals winning his first two matches in straight sets before edging an Emory foe 5-7, 6-4, 10-5. He would go on to fall to the eventual champion, Antonio Mora of Emory, in the Quarterfinals 2-6, 1-6.
Puig, the 2nd seeded player in the draw then rolled through his first three opponents in straight sets before his tournament came to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to the eventual runner-up from Emory.
In the consolation draw, senior Ingmar Remmerswaal would go on to win the Flight A consolation bracket by winning five straight matches, including two by injury default to take the consolation title. Remmerswaal edged out his teammate, Juan Vallejo, in the second round with a 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory.
Vallejo and Nadeem Jaber also won consolation bouts on the day as well.
The Bishop men will next be in action on October 3-4 at the Belmont Abbey Invitational.
