Men's Tennis Sweeps Sewanee

SEWANEE, TN - The NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team swept their two away matches over the weekend with Sewanee University (Tenn.). Wesleyan edged the Tigers 5-4 on Saturday with one group of players before dominating Sewanee on Sunday 8-1.

NCWC 8, SEWANEE 1

The doubles pairings of Juniors Juan VallejoJhonny Acosta (#2) and senior Roberto Puig / freshman John Falke (#1) helped stake the Bishops to an early 2-1 lead as they won both of doubles by scores of 8-3 and 8-2 respectively. 

Puig then won his #1 singles match 6-4 and 6-2 while freshman Valentin Mussi defeated his foe at #6 singles 6-1 and 6-2 to put NCWC up 4-1. Acosta then finished next winning 7-5, 7-5 at #3 to clinch the dual before sophomore Augusto Roca won 7-5, 7-6 at #5 singles.

Vallejo and Falke then both won two tight three-set matches at #2 and #4 singles respectively. Vallejo won 7-5, 6-7, 11-9 while Falke won 6-4, 5-7, and 6-2.

NCWC 5, SEWANEE 4

Wesleyan's "B" team then edged the Tigers on Saturday. After Wesleyan dropped all three doubles matches by scores of 8-3, 8-5 and 8-2, the men came back to win 5 of 6 singles matches to get the win.

Mussi won 6-3, 7-6 at the top line of singles while fellow freshman Tshepo Mosarwa won 7-6, 6-2 at the 2 line. Freshman Andrea Fanzaga won his bout 6-2 and 6-4 at teh 4 line while freshman Vittorio Noli won his 5th line bout 6-0, and 6-1. Freshman Joaquin Micheloni also won his 6th line singles match 6-3 and 6-4.

The men are now 2-2 on the season and will next head to face D-1 Wake Forest again on Thursday night before going to Methodist for a doubleheader on Saturday.
