Bishop Tennis Shuts Out 10th Ranked Southwestern amid 5-0 Day

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College 9th ranked men's tennis team hosted their first-ever matches at the brand new Indoor Sports & Education Facility on campus Saturday afternoon and evening.

Wesleyan first battled Div. II Belmont Abbey in the morning and won 7-2 on the indoor courts to make history hosting their first matches on indoor courts at NCWC. They then faced the Crusaders three more times during the day on a mix between outdoor and indoor courts winning 8-1 in the second match, 7-2 in the third, and 8-1 in the fourth before battling 10th ranked Southwestern TX at 7 PM back inside the ISEF Dome.

In the night match, the Bishops came to play as they would shut out the Pirates 9-0 on the indoor courts to improve to 5-1 on the year.

"The quintuple domination Saturday saw NCWC win all five matches including four against Division II Belmont Abbey," commented head coach Albie Brice. "This was not a team A,B,C team scenario either. These were four competitive matches requiring elite efforts from both teams."

"NCWC and Belmont Abbey have deep and talented rosters," continued Brice. "Belmont Abbey is considered to be a favorite to win their conference this season. We were excited to make history by hosting and winning our first indoor matches on the NCWC campus."

The ITA Fall Champion, 3rd ranked senior Jhonny Acosta helped lead the Bishops to the win by teaming with fellow senior Juan Vallejo to win 8-3 at the top doubles line before winning at #1 singles 6-3, 6-4. Vallejo also won 6-1, 6-2 at the #3 singles spot. Acosta and Vallejo also won 8-4 in their first doubles match of the day vs. Belmont Abbey.

At the #2 line, sophomore John Falke would split his first two sets, 6-2, 4-6 before his opponent retired due to injury while graduate senior Roberto Puig came on at #4 singles to win 7-6, 6-1. Falke and senior Max Robinson also teamed up to win at #2 doubles 8-1 before the duo of Tsepho Mosarwa and Thato Holmes combined to win 8-3 at the third doubles spot. Augusto Roca and Diego Segovia then closed out the win at the 5th and 6th lines in straight sets. Roca won 6-4 7-5 while Segovia won 7-5, 6-2.

Falke and Robinson also won 8-3 in doubles against BAC in their first match of the day also while Mosarwa and Holmes combined to beat BAC 8-5 as well. During the 7-2 match one win over BAC, the Bishops recorded straight set singles wins from Acosta, Segovia, Mosarwa, and Valentin Ancieto

Wesleyan was also a combined 39-6 record between singles and doubles over the five matches on the day. 

The Bishops will now remain home to host Washington & Lee and Barton College next Saturday beginning at 11 AM on the indoor courts.
