#12 Men's Tennis Ousts Averett and Shaw 8-1

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team used a dominant performance in going 6 for 6 in singles matches to roll past conference contender Averett 8-1 at home on Tuesday.

Averett, who is regionally ranked #13 was no match for the Bishops in singles, however, they did steal a win in the #3 doubles match. Wesleyan was led in doubles by the senior duo of Max Robinson and Roberto Puig in the two spot winning 8-4 while the third ranked top doubles team of seniors Jhonny Acosta and JP Vallejo pulled away late to win 8-5 in their match. The duo of John Falke and Thato Holmes then fell 8-6 in the third spot.

Then in singles, straight set wins by junior Augusto Roca at #5 (6-0, 6-2), Puig at #4 (6-2, 6-1), and third ranked Acosta at the top line (6-1, 6-0) clinched the win for the Bishops.

Falke then cruised 6-2, 6-2 at the third line while freshman Luca Knese won a thrilling three-setter 10-5 in the tiebreaker after he split the first two sets 6-4, 2-6. Vallejo then completed the win with a hard-earned 7-5, 7-6 win over former Bishop Stan Martherus at the two line.

Wesleyan improves to 20-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference with the win while Averett fell to 10-4 and 4-1.

The Bishops next battled Shaw University at 6:00 PM at the Slick Family Outdoor Courts. In the Shaw match, Wesleyan swept through the doubles with #3 Acosta teaming with freshman Diego Segovia to win 8-4 at the top line while Robinson and Puig again romped 8-3 at the two line. Vallejo and Falke then cruised 8-1 at the three line.

In singles, junior Matan Amitay and sophomore Andy Fanzaga then clinched the win for the Bishops with their straight set wins. Amitay won 6-1, 6-0 at the six line while Fanzaga woin 6-2, 6-1 at the third line. Tshepo Mosarwa then downed his foe at the two line 7-5, 6-1 while Aniceto won 6-4, 6-3 at the four line. Segovia ousted his foe in the third set tiebreak 10-8 after splitting the first two sets 6-2, 1-6. Joaquin Micheloni then suffered the lone defeat going down 5-7, 6-1, 8-10.

Wesleyan improves to 21-3 while dropping Shaw to 5-7. The Bishops will next host Mount Olive and Greensboro on Saturday at home at 1:00.
