#12 Men's Tennis Powers Past #19 UMW

Fredericksburg, VA - The 12th ranked NC Wesleyan College men's tennis team powered past 19th ranked Univ. of Mary Washington 8-1 on the road Tuesday afternoon.

The Bishops, ranked 4th in the South Region, showed that they are better than that ranking by defeating numerous ranked foes on the 3rd ranked region team of UMW (13-5) to improve to 25-4 in the regular season.

It began in the doubles as all three Bishop teams swept through the Eagles including two ranked doubles teams. Wesleyan's third doubles team of sophomore John Falke and senior JP Vallejo first cruised past their 14th ranked foes 8-2 while the 15th ranked doubles team of seniors Max Robinson and Roberto Puig upended the 9th ranked doubles team from UMW at the two spot.

Finally, Wesleyan completed the doubles sweep as the 4th ranked tandem of senior Jhonny Acosta and freshman Diego Segovia upset the top ranked regional doubles team 8-6 at the top line.

In the singles, the Bishops won five of six matches overall and four of those in straight sets while Puig won a three-set tiebreak at the four spot, 6-4, 4-6, 10-2. Junior Augusto Roca controlled his foe at the 5 spot 6-3, 6-4 while freshman Luca Knese dominated his foe 6-3, 6-1 at the six spot.

Regionally ranked #17 John Falke then cruised past his foe at the third spot 6-0, 7-5 while Vallejo fell 0-6, 4-6 at the two spot to the 12th ranked Eagle.

The top ranked Acosta, who is also ranked third nationally, then battled the third ranked player in the South region, Moses Hutchison, in the top spot in singles and the Bishop defeated him 7-6, 6-3 for the big win.

The Bishops will now head to Rome, Ga. for the USA South Conference Tournament as the top seed again. They will be looking to win their 13th straight conference title when they face off with 4th seed Brevard College on Thursday at 3:00 pm.
