ROME, GA - The 2022 USA South Men's Tennis Tournament has concluded with East Division top-seed N.C. Wesleyan winning its 13th consecutive tournament crown and improving to 28-4 on the season. The Battling Bishops swept East Division top-seeded Averett, 5-0, in Rome, Georgia at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.
N.C. Wesleyan started the match strong by taking a 3-0 lead after doubles play led by 8-2 wins from the top doubles team of senior Jhonny Acosta and freshman Diego Segovia and the #2 team of seniors Max Robinson and Roberto Puig while the team of senior JP Vallejo and John Falke also won 8-6 in the third position.
In singles, N.C. Wesleyan recevied wins from John Falke at the number two position 6-0, 6-4 and Segovia at the number-six position 6-2, 4-1 before his opponent retired to secure the championship. It was ultimately Falke who won the title-clinching match with his victory. The remaining four singles matches went unfinished. However, freshman Luca Knese was winning 6-1, 5-1 while Puig was also winning 6-4, 3-0 as they joined Falke on the all-tournament team. Falke was named MVP of the event as well.
Player of the Year and 3rd ranked Acosta was also winning 6-0, 4-1 at the top spot before the match was called while junior Augusto Roca was trailing 3-6, 1-0.
The Bishops will now prepare for the NCAA Regional Tournament with site and opponents to be announced next week.
