NCWC Softball Season Ends at USA South Tourney

Rocky Mount, N.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's softball team saw its 2013 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon at the USA South Conference Softball Tournament in Rocky Mount. The 6th-seeded Bishops rebounded from a 6-1 loss to Christopher Newport in the opener to post a 14-6 victory over Greensboro in the second round. Unfortunately, 5th-seeded Methodist was able to hold on for an 11-9 win in the day's final game, thereby eliminating Wesleyan in the process.

Versus Greensboro, the Bishops jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first innning as six different Bishops recorded RBIs in the frame. Junior Paige Pritchett made it 8-0 with a solo homerun in the second, and after plating single runs in the fourth and fifth, the Bishops managed a four-spot in the sixth.

The Pride were able to scratch six runs in their final three at-bats thanks to a series of Wesleyan fielding errors. Junior Leanna Fann (8-8) picked up the win in the circle, allowing just one earned run on seven hits.

Offensively, Pritchett finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Carly Creef, Carla Matthews and Jessica Hodges all tallied two hits apiece.

Against Methodist, the Monarchs took an 11-4 lead into the final inning only to see the Bishops erupt for five runs to pull within two at 11-9.  With the bases loaded and two outs, MU's Jessica Farmer was able to get out of the jam with a groundout to third to end the game.

Pritchett and Brittni Jones were each 2-for-4, while sophomore Kendra Hoes drove in two runs. The Bishops end their season with a 15-20 overall record and say farewell to lone senior Amanda Warley, who went 1-for-3 in her final contest.
