NCWC Softball Picks Up First League Win at Methodist

Fayetteville, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan's softball team picked up its first USA South win of the season on Wednesday, posting a 6-5 win in game one of the Bishops' league doubleheader at Methodist University. Freshman Sarah Bowyer drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a three-RBI double to centerfield in the seventh inning.

The Bishops took a 3-1 lead into the seventh before Bowyer's blast made it 6-1 heading into the Monarchs' final at-bat. MU's Kelsey Harrington proceeded to make things interesting with a grand slam homerun to left that brought the tying run to the plate. NCWC junior Jasmine Edgren, however, forced a flyout to end the threat and game.

Edgren (2-2) earned the win in the circle, going the distance en route to her second win of the season. She also helped her cause at the plate by driving in a pair of runs, while sophomore Brittany Manning and Bowyer each went 2-for-3 in the game.

Game two saw Wesleyan open up a 3-0 lead in the first thanks to a bases loaded walk to freshman Peyton Hyler that was followed by a two-run single by senior Sarah Roberts. Unfortunately, the Bishops would not scratch another run, while the Monarchs would plate two runs in the first and third innings to steal an eventual 4-3 win.

Freshman Logan Lowery (1-4) took the loss, despite giving up just two earned runs over six complete. Manning and Hyler each ripped two hits for the Bishops, who stranded eight runners in the contest.

Wesleyan is now 3-7 overall and 1-5 in USA South play, with three of those five losses coming in one-run decisions. The Bishops will host a pair of doubleheaders at Edge Field this weekend, beginning with a league tilt versus Ferrum on Saturday at 1:00pm.
