Softball Wins Trio of Games, Lowery Repeats Weekly Honor

Montgomery, Ala. / LaGrange, Ga. - The Battling Bishop softball team won a trio of USA South contests over the weekend, splitting a twinbill with Huntingdon on Saturday before sweeping LaGrange on Sunday. Sophomore pitcher Logan Lowery went 2-0 with a save during the 4-game stretch, which included a complete-game shutout of the Panthers in Sunday's opener.

On Saturday at Huntingdon, Wesleyan took game one by an 8-5 score in eight innings. The Hawks (15-17, 9-7 USA South) led 3-2 heading into the seventh only to see a 2-run homerun by Jasmine Edgren put the Bishops on top 4-3. HC countered with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to force extras, but RBIs by Peyton Hyler, Lindsey Sharpe, and Tiffany Manning (2) in the eighth allowed NCWC to pull away for the win.

Lowery picked up the win on the mound, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits with eight strikeouts over eight complete. Hyler paced the offense with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate.

Huntingdon went on to take the nightcap by a 3-2 tally.

At LaGrange (13-14, 6-10 USA South) on Sunday, Lowery pitched the Bishops to a 4-0 win in game one, again scattering five hits and racking up eight Ks. Junior Brittany Manning and sophomore Kaitlyn Checkan each blasted solo homers to back Lowery's effort.

Game two saw freshman Shelby Godwin (3-3) earn the 7-6 victory in relief after allowing just one run on three hits over 3.1 innings pitched. Lowery tossed the final 1.2 scoreless innings to notch her first save of the season. Offensively, Edgren and Godwin finished with three hits apiece, while Hyler added a 3-run homer in the first inning.

For her efforts, Lowery (10-4) picked up her second straight USA South Pitcher of the Week honor on Monday. The Kannapolis, N.C. finished the week with a 4-0 record and the one save in six appearances last week. In 27.1 innings pitched, Lowery posted a 0.51 ERA and just two earned runs on 15 hits with 27 strikeouts. Three of her victories came in complete-game performances, including Sunday's shutout of the Panthers.

The Bishops (15-13, 12-6 USA South) wrap up conference play on Wednesday with a home doubleheader versus rival Methodist. First pitch is slated for 2:00pm at Edge Field, and the Bishops will be honoring Edgren, their lone senior, prior to the opener.
