Wesleyan Softball Sweeps Shaw on Opening Day

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team swept Div. II Shaw University (N.C.) 5-0 and 12-4 in their season opener on Tuesday. 

NCWC 5, SHAW 0

Junior pitcher Beth Braswell dominated the Lady Bears (2-6) in game one throwing a complete game 2-hit shutout with 8 strikeouts in the win.

Junior Center Fielder Nichole Mooney and junior shortstop Meredith Mize led the offense with Mooney driving in two runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly while Mize also drove in a run on a single and went 2 for 3 in the game with a run scored and two stolen bases. Mooney and sophomore outfielder Logan Winstead also stole 2 bases each. Winstead ended up stealing four on the day as she recorded two more in game two.

NCWC 12, SHAW 4 (5 INNINGS)

Wesleyan then put on a 17-hit offensive clinic in game two as they rolled to a 12-4 win in just 5 innings. Mize got things started with a 2-run single in the first inning followed by a Kayla Molivas sacrifice fly. Consecutive RBI doubles from Braswell and Molivas made it 7-2 Bishops after 4 innings. Braswell, Molivas, and senior 2B Ashlyn Gosnell all drove in runs in the 5th on a double and 2 singles to put the game out of reach.

Mize led the offense going 4 for 4 in game two with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored while sophomore 3B  Brianna Myers went 3 for 4. Molivas also drove in 3 runs while sophomore outfielder Rylee Wheeler had a two-hit game with 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases as well. Braswell and Gosnell also had multi-hit games as well. 

Junior pitcher Grace Preston got the win on the mound throwing all 5 innings allowing 7 hits and 4 runs with 2 walks.

Wesleyan, 2-0, returns to action on Thursday in Virginia Beach with a DH scheduled at VA Wesleyan set to begin at 2 PM.
