Softball Outscores CU 35-7 in DH Sweep

CLEMMONS, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Softball team rolled to a massive 19-0 win over non-conference foe Carolina University (formerly Piedmont International) on the road Thursday afternoon.  They then cruised past the Bruins 16-7 in game two.

GAME 1: NCWC 19, CU 0

Wesleyan totaled 24 hits in the five innings of play led by a 5 for 5, 3-RBI day from sophomore outfielder Logan Winstead. Also registering a perfect day at the plate was senior CF Nichole Mooney who went 4 for 4 with a triple, 5 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and 2 RBIs from the leadoff spot. Senior SS Meredith Mize also recorded a 4-hit day going 4 for 5 with 3 RBIs, a triple and a double. 

Also recording multi-hit games were starting pitcher Beth Braswell, who had 2 hits, a triple and 4 RBIs and senior 2B Grace Preston, who was 2 for 2 with a walk and 3 run scored. 1B Bryona Knight and freshman catcher Mary Kat Raynor also recorded two-hit games and an RBI for the Bishops.

Braswell tossed all five innings allowing just 2 hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts. She got the offense going with her 2-run triple in the first inning while Mooney then tripled in two more runs and stole home in the 2nd inning. RBI doubles from Mize and Knight and an RBI single from Braswell then followed putting Wesleyan up 8-0.

Wesleyan then scored 4 more runs in the third before Preston tripled in another in the 4th and came around to score on an error making it 14-0. A Winstead RBI single and a Mize RBI triple then followed before Wesleyan added 3 more runs in the 5th on 3 more RBI singles from Raynor, Winstead and freshman Madison Shoulders.

GAME 2: NCWC 16, CU 7

Braswell again led off game two with an RBI triple while back-to-back singles from senior RF Chelsea Nixon and freshman Makayla Kopanski made it 4-0 in the first. Wesleyan then added 4 more runs in the 2nd on a Mize RBI double, a Braswell two-run double and another run on a fielders choice as they led 8-1. CU then scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning off Bishop starter Preston.

Braswell would then relieve Preston in the third and proceed to shutout the Bruins the rest of the way allowing zero hits and no walks with 6 strikeouts.

Wesleyan would then add two more runs on a double from sophomore DH Makayla Himes in the third to make it 10-7. Himes went on to go 4 for 4 on the day with 4 RBIs. She would later hit a two-run homer in the 6th. Mooney would also homer for the Bishops in the 4th as part of two-hit day. Winstead completed her perfect day by going 2 for 2 and reaching base three other times via walk as she went 7 for 7 in the DH with three stolen bases.

Wesleyan is now 3-1 on the year and will next return to action next Wednesday when they travel to CNU for a 2 PM DH.
