FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Softball team swept Methodist 1-0 and 3-1 on the road Sunday to clinch a spot in next week's East Divisional Championship series at Pfeiffer.

The low-scoring doubleheader saw the Bishops win game one 1-0 behind senior pitcher Beth Braswell's CG shutout and 10 strikeouts while Wesleyan then rallied to win game two 3-1 in 9 innings for the sweep.

Game one remained scoreless until the sixth inning when junior LF Logan Winstead drove in senior CF Nichole Mooney on her RBI single after Mooney's leadoff triple. Winstead led the Bishops with two hits in the game along with a stolen base.

Braswell threw all 7 innings allowing just 2 hits with 2 walks and 10 Ks improving to 14-5 on the year with 132 strikeouts.

GAME 2: NCWC 3, MU 1

Braswell would also start game two in the circle for the Bishops and proceed to throw another complete game, this time all 9 innings to pick up the win. She allowed just the one run on 7 hits with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts to get the win.

MU broke through first in game two scoring in the 5th inning before Wesleyan would tie it up in the 6th on SS Meredith Mize sac fly that brought in Winstead.

The game would then remain tied at one while in the 8th when Braswell would wiggle out of a 2-on 1-out jam as Mize threw out the winning run at home before Braswell struck out the next batter to get to the ninth.

In the 9th, Braswell drove in the go-ahead run on a single to left field to score Mize before senior catcher Summer Phillips' sac fly brought home Braswell to make it 3-1.

Braswell then struck out the final two batters in the ninth to clinch the win and the playoff berth while also batting 2 for 3 in the win.

Wesleyan improves to 17-15 overall and 10-4 in the East while MU falls to 10-26 and 4-10 in conference.

They will next head to Pfeiffer to battle the top seed Falcons next Sunday in the Divisional Championship series.
