Softball Sweeps Carolina U

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team rallied from behind to squeak out a 4-3 win in game one before dominating en route to a 4-0 game two win over Carolina University on Wednesday afternoon.

GAME 1

CU first got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Bishop freshman starter Emily Humphrey. Then after the Bruins added another run in the 4th on reliever Avery Jordan's wild pitch, Wesleyan would begin their rally.

The Bishops would put together a huge 4th inning as they loaded the bases on a walk, single and error before Jordan drove in the first run on a bases-loaded walk. After two outs in a row, senior CF Logan Winstead then stepped up a roped a RBI single to score senior LF Chelsea Nixon who had pinch ran for 1B Abby Todd, who singled. Then trailing 3-2, freshman 2B Skyler Walker came up and smoked a two-run single to left scoring Jordan and RF Juliette Desmarais to give Wesleyan the 4-3 edge. The play was overturned in the Bishops favor after Jordan was originally ruled out at home. 

Wesleyan then put in freshman closer Laila Holloway to pitch the final 3 innings scoreless to pick up her second save of the year. Jordan picked up the win after she threw the fourth while Holloway allowed just two hits and one walk over her three frames.

Winstead led the offense with two hits while Desmarais and sophomore catcher MK Raynor also knocked doubles as part of the 7-hit attack.

GAME 2

After a scoreless first three innings of game two between the foes, the Bishops finally broke through in the 4th inning as a two-run single from freshman DH Molly Alejandrino scored Walker and Winstead to make it 2-0. Winstead and Walker each singled to lead off the inning setting the table for Alejandrino.

Wesleyan then added two more runs in the 5th as an RBI double from Winstead scored Holloway, who walked, before Walker then singled in Nixon, who had reached via error.

Holloway picked up the win in the circle throwing the final 1 and 2/3 innings in relief of freshman starter Emily Osteguin. The game was called after five innings due to darkness. Osteguin and Holloway combined to allow just 3 hits over 5 scoreless innings while Osteguin struck out three batters. 

Wesleyan improves to 3-3 with the wins while Carolina falls to 5-11.

The Bishops next return to action on Monday when they head down to Myrtle Beach for the Fastpitch Softball Spring Break Tournament to compete in four games. They first will battle Penn Tech College (Pa.) at 1:00 pm March 7 before facing Marymount (Va.) at 3:30. Wesleyan will then battle Anna Maria College (Fla.) and Wilkes University (Pa.) on Tuesday at 9:30 and 1:30.
