Bishops Win 4 Athlete/Rookie of the Week Awards

USA South Athletes of the Week - March 21, 2022

NC Wesleyan College athletics took home four player of the week awards this week. Wesleyan was named athlete of the week in men's tennis, two rookie of the week awards in softball and track and one defensive player of the week in Lacrosse, the conference announced on Monday. Read on to see the winners below:

 
Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week

Emily Humphrey, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Winston-Salem, North Carolina earned a 2-1 record and a 2.23 ERA in four appearances, three starts, last week for the Battling Bishops. In 22.0 total innings pitched, Humphrey allowed eight runs (seven earned) on 25 hits with four walks and nine strikeouts. She earned complete-game wins over Elizabeth City State and Guilford while suffering a defeat at the hands of third-ranked Virginia Wesleyan. She beat out four other nominees. Humphrey is leading the team in wins, ERA and strikeouts.
 
 
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Devin Bautz, N.C. Wesleyan - The Laurel, Maryland sophomore goalkeeper posted a 2-1 record last week by collecting 26 saves and four ground balls in 173:30 minutes played in net for the Battling Bishops (2-6). In two wins over USA South foe Huntingdon, as well as Warren Wilson College, Bautz allowed just 16 goals and totaled 19 saves. She won over three other nominees.
 
 
MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week

John Falke, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore from Halland, Sweden, in his only two matches last week, earned singles and doubles wins at the number two position for the Battling Bishops (11-1) over opposition from 34th-ranked Christopher Newport. In singles, Falke defeated the 19th-ranked player in the region 6-7, 6-4, 10-4 while, in doubles, he teamed with Roberto Puig to get a victory 8-4. Falke also won Doubles team of the week last week with Puig.

 

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD (considering events from 3/7-3/20)

Women's Track Rookie of the Week

Mariah Brooks, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Lawrenceville, Georgia competed at the Spring Break Invitational at IMG last week in two events. In the 100 meters, Brooks set a new program record with a time of 11.98 while in the 200 meters, she finished in a time of 25.52, another program and personal best. She won over two other nominees. This is her second Rookie of the Week win as she also won on March 7.
