Softball Splits with Carolina U

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The N.C. Wesleyan College softball team split their road doubleheader with Carolina University (NC) on Thursday falling 10-1 in game one and hanging on to win 9-8 in game two.

GAME 1: CU 10, NCWC 1

Wesleyan fell into a hole in game one as Carolina scored three runs in the first on a wild pitch and an error to jump out to a quick lead. CU then made it 7-0 in the second on a two-run single, a triple and a passed ball.

An RBI double from 3B Molly Alejandrino that scored senior SS Meredith Mize was all the offense the Bishops could muster in game one. CU then added two runs in the 5th off reliever Sofia Salcido to put the game out of reach.

Freshman starter Emily Humphrey (5-3) ended up allowing 8 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits and no walks while striking out two over 4 innings.

GAME 2: NCWC 9, CU 8

Wesleyan then untracked their offense in game two putting up a 6-spot in the 4th inning to grab a 6-1 lead. The inning began with 1B Abby Todd's RBI single before sophomore OF Deonna Adams came around to score on an error. A two-run single from senior RF Chelsea Nixon then made it 4-1 before an RBI single from senior CF Logan Winstead drove in the Bishop's 5th run. Winstead would then score on an error to complete the big inning.

Unfortunately, CU (12-13) would crawl back into it scoring 4 runs in the bottom half of the 4th off freshman starting pitcher Laila Holloway (2-1) to trim NCW's lead down to one at 6-5.

However, a big three-run homer from sophomore catcher MK Raynor then put Wesleyan back in front 9-5 in the 5th. The Lady Bruins would then get two back in the 5th off freshman reliever Avery Jordan to make it 9-7. However, Jordan would close the game out in the ninth for the win.

Jordan finished the game allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with 2 walks over three innings. Holloway lasted 4 innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits with 0 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Offensively, four Lady Bishops finished with two-hit games including Mize, Todd, 3B Brianna Myers, and Nixon. Mize also stole two bases as the Bishops improve to 10-8 on the year.

Wesleyan will now begin conference play on Saturday when they head north to Virginia to battle Averett in a 1:00 PM DH.
