DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team rallied to earn a split with Averett University in their conference opener on the road Saturday.

Game 1: NCWC 4, AU 3

After a three-run homer in the first inning off freshman starter Emily Humphrey gave AU a 3-0 lead, the pitcher would settle in nicely and proceed to throw six shutout innings after to keep the Lady Bishops in the game.

Wesleyan scored their first run in the 4th inning as 3B Molly Alejandrino drove in senior SS Meredith Mize with an RBi single. Then in the 6th inning, the Bishops tied the game at 3 with a Mize two-run homer. The home run was Mize's first of the season.

NCWC then scored the go-ahead run in the 7th inning on an Alexis Whitfield sac bunt that combined with an Averett error scored Humphrey for the 4-3 edge. Humphrey then closed out the win in the 7th. She finished throwing all 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 6 walks and 3 strikeouts and not a single run after the first inning.

Alejandrino led with two hits while freshman LF Skyler Walker also knocked a double.

GAME 2: AU 9, NCWC 1

In game two, the Bishops got out to a 1-0 lead on a Brianna Myers RBI single in the 4th inning while freshman starter Laila Holloway (2-2) had not allowed any hits through three innings. However, the Lady Cougars got to Holloway in the 4th for two runs. AU then scored four more in the 5th off freshman reliever Avery Jordan on a homer and two singles to take a 6-1 lead.

AU then put the game out of reach with a three-run sixth inning off freshman reliever Sofia Salcido. Holloway finished the game tossing 4 innings allowing just two runs on 3 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts.

Alejandrino, Mize, Myers, and CF Logan Winstead all recorded hits in the game. Wesleyan goes to 11-9 overall while Averett improves to 8-6.

The Bishops will next return to action on Tuesday afternoon with a DH at Meredith College beginning at 2:00 PM.
