Humphrey's Shutout & Mize's Big Day Leads Softball to Sweep of SVU

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College softball team used a shutout in game one and a 11-run offensive barrage in game two as the Lady Bishops swept away conference foe Southern Virginia on the road Saturday.

Wesleyan used a 7-inning shutout from freshman pitcher Emily Humphrey to win game one 3-0 and then piled on 11-2 to win game two in 6 innings.

GAME 1: NCWC 3, SVU 0

The low-scoring game one saw Humphrey allow just 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out six to improve to 10-5 on the year. The game remained scoreless until the top of hte 7th when the Bishops broke through for 3 runs. The inning began with back-to-back singles from 2B Alexis Whitfield and catcher MK Raynor. Humphrey then bunted them both over before senior CF Logan Winstead's RBI single and senior SS Meredith Mize's RBI sacrifice bunt. After freshman Skyler Walker drew a walk, she stole second causing a bad throw and helping Winstead score the final run.

Raynor led the offense with two hits and a stolen base.

GAME 2: NCWC 11, SVU 2 (6 INNINGS)

Wesleyan then got off to a 4-0 lead in game two through 2 and a half innings as Mize scored twice on wild pitches while Raynor smacked a two-run homer. SVU then trimmed the Bishop lead in half scoring two runs off freshman starter Laila Holloway in the third. Holloway then settled down to throw all six innings allowing just two runs on 9 hits with a walk and a strikeout to improve to 4-5.

The Bishops then scored four runs in the 4th beginning with senior RF Chelsea Nixon's RBI double, Mize's two-run single, and 1B Abby Todd's RBI single to make it 8-2. Wesleyan then added three runs in the 6th to put the game away on Mize's two-run double and Walker's RBI single. 

Winstead and Mize led the team with two-hit games while also stealing two bases each. Mize also walked twice as she had a perfect day at the plate reaching base all four times.

The Lady Bishops improve to 17-15 on the season and 7-7 in conference while SVU falls to 3-29 and 1-13 in conference.

The women will now return home for the remainder of their season to host Methodist on Wednesday at 2:00 and Salem on Saturday at 1:00 for Senior Day as they look to make a postseason push.
