Wesleyan Splits with Shaw in Tennis Action

Rocky Mount, N.C. - In Wednesday afternoon tennis action, the 5th-ranked Battling Bishop men turned in a 9-0 sweep of Shaw University, while Wesleyan's women dropped a 7-2 decision to the Division II Bears.

On the men's side, the Bishops jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles play, surrendering just seven games combined. The tandems of Robert Kjellberg/Alexey Rumyantsev and Rinat Khussainov/Viktor Selander were both winners by 8-2 scores at the top two seeds, while 3rd-seeded Marcelo Prata/Anton Filinov won by an 8-3 tally.

In singles play, Khussainov, Rumyantsev, Fred Lemongo, Selander and Clayton Sonn were all straight-set winners at #1 through #5, respectively. Artsiom Prostak completed the team sweep with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-6 victory at the 6th seed.

The women's match saw Shaw open up a 2-1 advantage in doubles with wins at #1 and #2. Wesleyan freshmen Yvonne Kamegne and Bibhuti Baral turned in an 8-2 win at the 3rd seed, and it was then Baral who earned the Bishops' lone singles point with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #6.

Both the men (4-0) and women (1-4) return to action on Saturday when they open up USA South Conference play versus Averett University. The matches are slated to begin at 12 noon at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Complex.
