Hviid Earns Weekly Honor, Tennis Splits with Chicago

Hilton Head, S.C. - North Carolina Wesleyan's tennis teams split a pair of matches with the University of Chicago on Monday, with the 5th-ranked men downing 27th-ranked UC by a 6-3 score and women falling in a 9-0 sweep. Monday's tennis news also saw freshman Peter Hviid earn his first USA South Rookie of the Week award.

In Monday's men's action, the Battling Bishops (8-1) fell behind 2-1 in doubles play as top-seeded Robert Kjellberg and Alexey Rumyantsev were NCWC's lone winners, 8-3. The tandems of Rinat Khussainov and Hviid, along with Marcelo Prata and Anton Filonov, each suffered close 8-6 losses at #2 and #3 doubles, respectively.

Wesleyan erased any thoughts of an upset with straight-set wins at #1 through #4 singles. Playing at the top seed, Khussainov surrendered just one game in a dominating performance, while Kjellbert, Rumyantsev and Viktor Selander also won handedly. Senior Fred Lemongo was a three-set winner at the 5th seed to secure the 6-3 final.

Earlier in the day, Hviid was tabbed the USA South's Rookie of the Week. The freshman from Gentofte, Denmark earned a 2-0 record both in singles and doubles action last week for the Bishops. He earned singles wins at the #6 and #3 positions over opponents from Washington College and Shenandoah, and in doubles action, he earned a pair of wins at the #2 position.

In Monday's women's action, Chicago gave up just four games in doubles play for an early 3-0 lead. UC proceeded to sweep singles action in straights.

Wesleyan's women (2-7) return to action on Wednesday when the Bishops travel to William Peace University for a 3:00pm USA South match versus the Pacers. NCWC's men will next face the University of Mary Washington on Friday at 3:30pm in Fredericksburg, Va.
