NCWC Women Post Pair of USA South Victories, Fall at Barton

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Battling Bishop women's tennis team went 2-1 over a three-match span this week, picking up key league wins over Averett and Greensboro. NCWC's lone loss came at Division II Barton College and snapped a five-match winning streak. Wesleyan is now 6-4 on the season, 5-1 in USA South action.

The week began with a 7-2 win at Averett on Tuesday. Florencia Sorrentino teamed with Ana Diaz for an 8-2 win at #2 doubles, while Andrea Tobar and Leigh Hales were winners at the #3 position by the same score.

In singles play, freshman Stephany Barbera bounced back from a loss at top doubles to earn a straight-set win at #2 singles (6-0, 6-1). Sorrentino, Diaz, Tobar and Hales were winners at #2 through #6, with Hales posting a 12-10 superset win in the match's lone three-setter at #6.

At Barton on Thursday, the Bulldogs handed the Bishops a 6-3 defeat to snap NCWC's win streak. Sorrentino/Diaz managed Wesleyan's lone point in doubles play with an 8-2 win at #2, while top-seeded Valeria Berber and 5th-seeded Tobar were straight-set winners in singles action.

The Bishops wrapped up the week with a dominating 9-0 win over Greensboro on Saturday morning at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center. Wesleyan surrended just three games on the day.

Next up for the Bishops are Piedmont (2:00pm) and Maryville (12:00pm) next Friday and Saturday at home, respectively.
