Women's Tennis Falls to ECU and GVSU

ORLANDO, Fla. - The NC Wesleyan College women's tennis team battled two tough foes on their spring break trip to Orlando this week first falling to nearby D-1 foe East Carolina 7-0 on Sunday and 5-2 to D-2 Grand Valley State (Mich.) on Monday.

ECU 7, NCWC 0

In the match with ECU, Wesleyan freshman Fariza Abdulloeva lost a heartbreaker in #1 singles as she won the first set 6-1, but then fell 3-6 and 8-10 in the tiebreaker in the final set. Senior Stephany Barbera also dropped a very close match in #5 singles falling 7-5 and 7-6 to ECU.

ECU then won the first doubles match to wrap  up the dual meet 7-0 even as the team of Julianna Johnson and Milena Amedieva defeated their foes 4-3 at #2 doubles. ECU improved to 11-2 with the win.

GVSU 5, NCWC 2

Abdulloeva would lead the Bishops in their second match of the trip as well as she won her #1 singles bout in three close sets, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7, and her doubles match 6-3, pairing with Barbera. The doubles team of Giulia Zanetti and Nicole Halabi also won their doubles match 6-2 as Wesleyan would take 2 of the 3 doubles matches from the Vikings. Zanetti also fell 7-6 and 6-1 in her #3 singles match.

GVSU improves to 14-2 on the season.

Wesleyan falls to 2-2 on the season and is back in action Tuesday for two dual matches. The first match vs. D-2 Minnesota-State Moorhead which was scheduled for earlier in the day was rained out and was canceled while the second match is at 7:30 PM vs. Hampton University (Va.).
