Women's Tennis Defeats RPI; Falls by slim margin to D-1 Hampton

ORLANDO, Fla. - The N.C. Wesleyan College women's tennis team fell by the slimmest of margins to D-1 foe Hampton University (Va.) 5-4 late Tuesday night down in Orlando at the USTA National Campus.

HAMPTON 5, NCWC 4

The Lady Bishops were led by freshman Milena Amedieva, and sophomores Julianna Johnson, and Louise Hovhammer in singles play as they all won their matches. Amedieva won in three sets at #2 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 while Johnson won 6-2, 6-1 at #4 singles. Hovhammer then tied the match at 3 wins apiece with her 6-3, 6-2 win at #6 singles.

The #3 doubles pairing of sophomore Giulia Zanetti and junior Nicole Halabi then defeated their foes 6-4 while Hampton also won at #1 doubles to tie the match at 4 wins apiece. It would come down to the #2 doubles match featuring senior Stephany Barbera and freshman Fariza Abdulloeva who ended up dropping a close 7-6 bout to drop the match to the Lady Pirates.

Hampton improves to 1-8 on the season.

NCWC 8, RPI 1

Wesleyan is also coming off an 8-1 win on Thursday morning in their matchup with D-3 Rensselaer Polytechnic (N.Y.) in Orlando to improve to 3-3 on the season while dropping RPI to 5-4.

Freshman Fariza Abdulloeva led the Bishops in this match dominating her foe in #1 singles 6-0, 6-1 and teaming with Hovhammer in doubles to win 8-3. Amedieva and Johnson also each won their singles matches at #2 and #3 rather easily while winning their doubles match 8-3 as well. Zanetti also won 6-0, 6-2 in #4 singles while teaming with Halabi again to win doubles 8-3 as well. Hovhammer also rallied to win her #5 singles match in 3 sets taking it 10-7 in the tiebreaker. Barbera unfortunately dropped a hard-fought three-setter falling 7-5 in the third set after taking the second 7-6.

The Bishops have also scheduled a new match with D-2 Minnesota St. Mankato that is set for Thursday afternoon at 1:30 as well.
