Lady Bishop Tennis Stops Methodist 6-3 to Advance to Tournament final

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The top seeded NC Wesleyan College women's tennis team stopped rival Methodist 6-3 in the East Division Final on Sunday from the Slick Family tennis Center to advance to next week's USA South Tournament final.

The Lady Bishops, who have now won their 6th in a row to improve to 9-6, will now host West top seed Piedmont College on Sunday at 11 AM.

Wesleyan got out to a 2-1 lead after doubles as the top duo of freshmen Stefanie Wilske and Elisa Mariotti stormed by 8-1 before the #2 team of seniors Giulia Zanetti and Talitha Rowan edged by 8-6.

Wesleyan then got singles wins from Mariotti at the 3 spot (6-0, 6-1), Rowan at the 4 spot (6-2, 6-1), and Wilske (6-4, 6-1) at the top spot to clinch the match. Zanetti would also add a hard-fought win at the 2 spot, 6-4, 6-4.

Junior Chandler Brice also lost a tough battle at the six spot falling 4-6, 6-7 and 7-5 in the tiebreak.

The 2021 USA South Women's Tennis Tournament's first round has concluded with both the top seeded teams from each division advancing to the championship match. In the East Division, top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan defeated second-seeded Methodist, 6-3, while the West Division's top-seed Piedmont swept second-seeded Huntingdon, 9-0.

The finals of the tournament will be played in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and hosted by N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday.
