Track and Field Competes in First Ever Indoor Conference Championship

Winston Salem, NC - The Lady bishops competed in their first-ever indoor conference championships Friday in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Although outnumbered they took the stage and accepted the challenge in grand fashion! The team of just five Lady Bishops (Anna Ray, Ahnia Cherry, Mariah Brooks, Teanna Bellamy, and Christian Van Norden) knew they had to make their presence felt in every event they participated in. Needless to say, they were up to the task! The Lady Bishop track and field started the day off with Christian Van Norden setting the tone with her first and only competition of the season in the shot put throw. Christian lead the field all the way up to the last throw out of 6 to end up placing second with a throw of 11.08 meters. Up next in the field was Ahnia Cherry in the long jump. Ahnia put the pressure on the field with her first time competing in the long jump event. Unranked Ahnia finished second overall with a jump of 5.20 meters.

The first event on the track for NC Wesleyan was the women's 60-meter preliminary round. The trio of Mariah Brooks, Ahnia Cherry, and Teanna Bellamy took center stage ready to perform. Brooks was up in the first heat and set the bar high for the rest of the field with a sizzling Atlantic Indoor Championship record of 7.67! Cherry was up next and won her heat as well with a jaw-dropping 7.69. Bellamy also made the finals placing 6th overall with a time of 8.33. In the 60-meter finals, the fastest on the track would be determined between Mariah Brooks and Ahnia Cherry. In a photo finish Rocky Mount, North Carolina native freshman Ahnia Cherry edged sophomore Mariah Brooks with another record-breaking performance by the duo! Ahnia ran 7.62 to take the crown and Mariah ran 4-tenths of a second behind in 7.66! Bellamy finished 7th with a time of 8.40.
