Volleyball Downs Marietta, Hart Named All-Tourney

Lexington, Va. - North Carolina Wesleyan's volleyball team rebounded from a trio of tough losses at this weekend's Washington & Lee Tournament to down Marietta by a 3-1 score on Saturday afternoon. Senior Anna Hart earned All-Tournament accolades thanks to her solid all-around play, while libero Shana Ayers did her part defensively, averaging 22 digs per match over the course of the tourney.

In the 3-1 victory over Marietta, set scores were 21-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-22. Junior Taylor Johnson put down a team-high 13 kills, while senior Meredith Smith added 10 of her own. Kristi Lucas dished out 31 assists, and Ayers turned in a tourney-best 35 digs.

Earlier in the day, NCWC suffered a 3-0 sweep to Lynchburg (25-16, 25-12, 25-21).  Johnson and Hart combined for 15 Bishop kills, while Ayers had 22 digs.

Wesleyan had opened play on Friday with a 3-1 loss to Johns Hopkins (24-26, 25-19, 25-13, 25-19), which was followed by a 3-0 sweep at the hands of host W&L (25-23, 25-21, 25-22). Hart turned in 11 kills, 13 digs and two blocks versus JHU and then led her Bishops with nine kills against the Generals.

Now 2-5 overall, the Bishops will return to action at Meredith College on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7:00pm in Raleigh.
