#3 NCWC Advances to Semis with Sweep of #6 WPU

Martinsville, Va. - The quarterfinals in the USA South Volleyball Tournament continued to be good to the higher-seeded team, as 3rd-seeded North Carolina Wesleyan delivered the third straight 3-0 win as it downed 6th-seeded William Peace (25-12, 25-15, 25-14) in straight sets, the third straight sweep of the tournament.

The Battling Bishops (21-9) jumped on top early and never looked back. They took a 10-2 lead in the opening set as they dominated play at the net. Former Pacer player Taylor Johnson set the tone early for Wesleyan's strong play and she was joined by Meredith Smith and Anna Hart in establishing dominance.

The Pacers (15-17) came into the match on an up-note, having won seven of their last nine matches. But Peace played without primary setter Brooke Norris, the team's only senior, and her leadership was sorely missed.

After being doubled up in the first set, the Pacers came out strong in the second period, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. But the Bishops quickly regrouped and after four consecutive aces by Lauren Wright, Wesleyan held a 13-7 advantage en route to a 10-point win.

The third set was more of the same, with the Bishops controlling play at the net while the Pacers continued with unforced errors all over the court.

Hart, a First Team All-Conference choice, led the way with eight kills, three assists and two digs. Johnson, Smith and Wright each had five kills, and Kristi Lucas added 20 assists and 10 digs for Wesleyan.

Lauren Naugle had 10 kills and six digs for the Pacers, while Julia Mainwaring chimed in with 15 assists and 13 digs.

The Bishops advance to the Saturday's semis, where they will take on the winner of #2 Maryville/#7 Meredith at 2:00pm.
