Volleyball Bishops Give Gentile First Two Coaching Victories

Raleigh, N.C. - First-year head coach Vicky Gentile picked up the first two victories of her young career on Saturday, leading her N.C. Wesleyan volleyball squad to wins over Guilford and Johnson & Wales. The matches were played as part of a quad-meet at William Peace University in Raleigh.

Gentile's first victory came in a dominating 3-0 sweep of Guilford College. Set scores were 25-16, 25-15 and 25-19. Tori Stewart paced Wesleyan with a match-high 11 kills, while fellow junior Evie Hunter and sophomore Emily McLain anchored the defensive effort with 14 and 12 digs, respectively. Additionally, junior setter Ayla Brewer dished out 31 assists in the match.

As a team, the Bishops racked up 38 kills to the Quakers' 19.

NCWC later turned in a 3-1 victory over Johnson & Wales University (NC). Set scores were 20-25, 25-12, 25-19 and 25-14. Stewart, Hunter and freshman Taylor Smith combined for 33 kills, and Hunter completed the double-double with 14 digs. Elsewhere statistically, libero Christina Huber added 19 digs, and Brewer again led Wesleyan's offense by tallying 38 assists.

The Bishops (2-3) return to action on Tuesday at Virginia Wesleyan. The match is slated for a 7:00pm start in Virginia Beach.
