Volleyball Drops Tournament Opener to Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College volleyball team had a tough battle with Hollins University (Va.) in the opener of the Roanoke Maroon Classic on Friday afternoon as they fell in four sets.

Hollins took the first set 25-18 before the Bishops stormed back to squeak out a tight second set, 25-23. Hollins then roared back to take game three 25-12 before also winning the fourth and deciding game 25-17.

Hollins (4-2) totaled nine more kills than the Bishops 53-44 while hitting .252 overall. Wesleyan hit .187 overall totaling double-digit kills in 3 of the 4 sets led by a team high of 12 from senior middle blocker Hannah Thrasher. Thrasher hit .400 with 2 blocks while sophomore right side Sydney Barnwell also played well with 7 kills and no errors hitting .583 with an ace and a block.

Senior Haileigh Riesenbeck also had a very good match recording yet another double-double of 11 kills and 19 assists and finishing one dig shy of a triple-double. Junior libero Samantha Butensky also tallied a career high of 30 digs in the defeat.

The Bishops (0-2) will now face off with former rival Ferrum College (Va.) at 4:00 in the second of 4 matches in the Classic.
