Volleyball Falls in 4 to Randolph at Roanoke Classic

SALEM, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team dropped a tough four-set match to Randolph College (Va.) in their final match of the weekend at the Roanoke Maroon Classic. The Bishops also fell earlier Saturday morning to a tough ODAC foe in Bridgewater College (Va.) in three sets.

However, senior middle Hannah Thrasher was named to the Roanoke Classic All-Tournament team as well for her stellar play all weekend.

RANDOLPH 3, NCWC 1

Wesleyan hit .103 in the first set on 10 kills while forcing 7 Randolph errors to take the first game 25-23. Each team struggled hitting the ball in the second set with Randolph hitting 12 kills, but making ten errors, but still won 25-19. Randolph then won the third game 25-20 behind 15 kills and hitting .170. Randolph (3-2) then held off a Bishop rally in the fourth set to win 25-19 after Wesleyan had rallied to 20-17. 

Wesleyan totaled 32 kills in the match led by eight from sophomore middle Lauren Weaver, who was making her season debut during the Saturday matches. Weaver also added two blocks while Hannah Thrasher totaled 5 kills with just one error hitting .267 with two blocks and an ace.

Senior setter Haileigh Riesenbeck also recorded another double-double as she assisted on 21 balls and dug 21 others along with two aces and two kills as she posted a nice all-around game. Junior outside hitter Callie Cline also added 5 kills and 15 digs with an ace in the defeat.

BRIDGEWATER 3, NCWC 0

In the first match of the day, the Bsihops fell to a powerful Bridgewater squad (6-0) in three sets, 10-25, 10-25, and 21-25. BC combined for 22 kills and only two errors over the first two sets hitting .500 and .348 while Wesleyan totaled 16 kills but made 15 errors. Wesleyan played a much more competitive third set as they stayed close throughout, but fell by four in the end as the Bishops hit .105 with 9 kills.

Sophomore right side Sydney Barnwell led the way with six kills while Callie Cline added four kills and a team-best 12 digs. Riesenbeck also led in assists with ten while libero Samantha Butensky also added 9 digs and 3 assists. Sophomore OH Bijou Patel also hit five kills in the loss. 

The Bishops fall to 1-4 on the season after the tournament and will next return home to host Piedmont International on Tuesday at 6 PM in Everett Gym.
