Volleyball loses Battle with Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team lost a close battle in 4 sets on the road at non-conference foe Hollins University (Va.) on Friday night.

Wesleyan squeaked out a tight first set 25-23 before Hollins took the next two 25-16, and 25-15 hitting .303 and .281. The fourth set was then a barn-burner as each team recorded 12 kills and neither squad would lead by more than 4 points the entire set. Wesleyan led the fourth set until Hollins came back to lead 24-23. The Bishops would then win 4 of the next 6 points to elad 27-26 but could not force a final set in falling 29-27.

Sophomore right side Sydney Barnwell led the Bishops with a season and career high of 17 kills with 6 digs and a block as she hit .250. Senior middle Hannah Thrasher also played well tallying 7 kills while hitting .227 with 3 aces, 3 blocks and a dig.

Senior setter Kelly Ammons also added 11 assists and 9 digs with fellow senior setter Haileigh Riesenbeck leading with 24 assists, 6 digs, and an ace. Junior Sam Butensky and sophomore Devin Lassiter also combined for 26 digs and 5 assists. Junior OH Callie Cline also added a team-high 20 digs with 3 blocks and 3 kills.

The Bishops fall to 3-7 with the loss while Hollins improved to 7-7. Wesleyan will next remain on the road when they head back to western Virginia on Sunday to face Ferrum College (Va.) and Regent University (Va.) in a tri-meet at 2 and 4 PM.
