Volleyball Sweeps Ferrum Tri-Match

FERRUM, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College volleyball team pulled out two wins on Sunday afternoon in their non-conference tri-match with Regent University (Va.) and host Ferrum College.

Wesleyan swept past Regent easily in three sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-12) while ousting Ferrum in a five-set thriller. Wesleyan improves to 5-7 on the year while Regent falls to 1-7 and Ferrum goes to 3-8.

In the win over Regent, the Lady Bishops were led by 9 kills from sophomore RSH Sydney Barnwell and five kills each from middles Hannah Thrasher and Lauren Weaver. Thrasher also added an impressive season high of 5 aces and a block while Weaver blocked three attacks.

Wesleyan hit .417 with 12 kills in the first set and .129 with 11 kills in the second. Senior Setter Haileigh Riesenbeck led with 14 assists and 4 digs while fellow setter Kelly Ammons had 9 assists and 3 aces.

NCWC 3, FERRUM 2

In the thrilling win over Ferrum, Barnwell again led the Bishops in offesne as she recorded a new season and career high of 21 kills while hitting .154 with 4 blocks. The Bishops won the first set 25-23 before Ferrum came back to take the second by a score of 25-23 also. Wesleyan then controlled the third set 25-19 with Ferrum then taking the fourth 25-19. The Lady Bishops then pushed past the Panthers in the fifth set by hitting .294 with 8 kills to win it 15-12 after trailing 12-9. Barnwell had two kills to clinch the final points for the Bishops.

Weaver added 8 kills and 3 blocks in the middle while sophomore OH Bijou Patel also had 9 kills with 5 digs and a block. Junior OH Callie Cline then led the team with 24 digs while also recording 8 kills with Riesenbeck leading in assists with 34 along with 4 aces, 9 digs, and 2 kills. Thrasher had another 5 aces along with 5 blocks and 4 kills in the win as well. 

Wesleyan is back in action on Tuesday night at 7:00 when they return home to host Peace University.
