Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Home

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College volleyball team split their conference tri-match at home on Saturday falling to Salem College (N.C.) in 4 sets, but defeating the Greensboro College Pride in 4 sets in the second match.

NCWC 3, GC 1

Wesleyan pulled out a nice win over Greensboro controlling the first two sets to take them 25-22 and 25-18 behind 14 kills apiece and hitting .265 in the second set. Greensboro then squeaked out a third set win 25-23 on 18 kills before the Bishops came out quick in set 4 leading 10-1 early and hanging on to win 25-20 to pick up their 7th win of the season.

Sophomore right side Sydney Barnwell led the Bishops with 17 kills and only 3 errors hitting .400 with 2 blocks and 4 digs. Junior OH Callie Cline also played very well tallying 11 kills and 20 digs with an ace while sophomore middle Lauren Weaver hit .391 with 13 kills and 2 blocks.

Senior setter Haileigh Riesenbeck also recorded a double-double with 28 assists and 12 digs while fellow setter Kelly Ammons also added 17 assists, 8 digs, and an ace. Junior Libero Sam Butensky also played well tallying 28 digs with an assist while senior middle Hannah Thrasher also set a season-high with 8 service aces, along with 3 blocks, 3 digs, and 3 kills.

Greensboro falls to 10-9 overall and 2-3 in the conference with their losses on the day as they also fell to Salem in 3. The Bishops improved to 7-12 and 2-4 in the division.

SALEM 3, NCWC 1

In the first match of the day, the Bishops fell behind early to the Spirits (17-25, 14-25) before rallying to take set three 25-21. Salem then held off Wesleyan in set four to grab their 9th win of the season as they go to 5-1 in the East.

Barnwell again led the Bishops with 11 kills and 8 digs with 2 blocks while Weaver had 8 kills and 4 blocks in the middle. Cline also had a nice game with 7 kills and 17 digs with an ace and 2 blocks while setters Ammons and Riesenbeck each had double-doubles. Ammons had 15 assists and 13 digs while Riesenbeck had 20 assists, 11 digs, 2 aces and a kill. Butensky also had 21 digs while Thrasher had 5 kills.

Wesleyan will return to action on Tuesday when they head to Greensboro to battle Guilford College at 6:30 PM.
