Volleyball Defeats Randolph to Earn Split

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team dropped their non-conference match on the road at Piedmont International (N.C.) 3-0 on Friday afternoon. However, the Lady Bishops then went on to dismantle ODAC foe Randolph College (VA) in three sets, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-14.

PIU 3, NCWC 0

Piedmont won the first set 25-16 hitting .231 with 10 kills while the Bishops recorded 8 kills. Wesleyan would take a 17-16 lead in the second set forcing a PIU timeout before the Bruins would go on a 9-1 run to take the middle set 25-18. PIU then played very well in the third set hitting .368 with 15 kills to take it 25-15.

Wesleyan managed 24 kills in the match while PIU had 35 but only 9 errors hitting .255.

Senior middle Hannah Thrasher led the Bishops with 7 kills hitting .214 with two aces while fellow middle, sophomore Lauren Weaver, recorded 4 kills and hit a team-best .222 with a block.

Junior RS Augusta Preston and sophomore OH Bijou Patel also registered 3 kills apiece while junior libero Sam Butensky collected a team-high 16 digs with 2 assists and an ace. The senior setting duo of Kelly Ammons and Haileigh Riesenbeck also combined for 18 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Aubrey Nicholson scored a team-best four service aces in the loss as well.

Wesleyan falls to 9-18 while Piedmont improves to 13-9.

NCWC 3, RC 0

The Ladies then took on Randolph College (Va.) in a neutral site match on Piedmont's court. The Bishops used 11 kills in the first set to hold off Randolph. Wesleyan then went on a late run in the second set on 13 kills to take it 25-18. The Bishops got off to a terrific 15-3 start in the third set en route to handling the Wildcats 25-14 on 13 kills hitting .231.

Sophomore Right Side Sydney Barnwell had a huge game for the ladies hitting .375 with a team-best 11 kills along with 3 blocks to help lead them to the win. The middle-blocking duo of Thrasher and Weaver then wreaked havoc by combining for 13 kills and just two errors as Thrasher hit .400 with 7 kills and Weaver hit .333 with 6. Thrasher added 2 aces and 2 blocks while Weaver had 3 digs and 3 blocks including a solo.

Riesenbeck would record a double-double in the win also assisting on 19 attacks along with 14 digs and an ace while Butensky added 14 digs, 5 assists, one ace and one kill as the libero. Junior Callie Cline also added 15 digs while Nicholson chipped in 5 kills, 8 digs, and 2 blocks.

Wesleyan, now 10-18 will next face Greensboro and Salem in a conference tri-match Saturday beginning at Noon in Greensboro.
