Volleyball Splits Tri-match at Pfeiffer as Season comes to end

Misenheimer, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team split their USA South tri-match at Pfeiffer University (NC) on Saturday defeating Mary Baldwin (Va.) in 3 sets, but falling to Pfeiffer 3-0.

The loss to Pfeiffer eliminated the Bishops from postseason play next week as Methodist got the final spot from the East as each team finished with a 5-11 record, but MU won the tiebreaker by sweeping the season series.

NCWC 3, MBU 0

Wesleyan defeated MBU in the first match of the day by scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-21 led by hitting .279 with 15 kills in the second set. Sophomore middle Lauren Weaver led the Lady Bishops with 10 kills and only one error hitting .529 along with 4 blocks while fellow middle, senior Hannah Thrasher also hit .500 with 6 kills, 2 blocks, 2 aces, and 3 digs.

Junior hitters Augusta Preston and Callie Cline also played well with Preston recording a season-high of 8 kills and hitting .316 along with 5 digs and 3 blocks while Cline registered 5 kills and 9 digs.

The senior setting duo of Kelly Ammons and Haileigh Riesenbeck also combined for 23 assists and 9 digs with Ammons also adding 2 aces while junior libero Sam Butensky had a team-high 13 digs, 3 assists, and a kill.

PU 3, NCWC 0

Pfeiffer defeated the Bishops over 3 tight sets in the final match of the day 25-22, 25-22, and 25-21. Wesleyan totaled 33 kills in the match including hitting .150 in the second set but PU matched the Bishops with 33 kills over the three sets to eke out the win.

Weaver had another big game leading the team with 15 kills while hitting a team-best .367 with 3 digs and 3 blocks. Freshman RS Aubrey Nicholson also added 6 kills and a season-high of 17 digs along with an ace and a block while Cline also added 16 digs to go along with 2 kills and a block.

Butensky also added a team-high 18 digs with an ace and an assist while Riesenbeck recorded 17 assists, 8 digs, an ace and a block in the loss.

Wesleyan finishes the season 11-22 while Pfeiffer finished 14-14 and also 5-11 in the USA South. The Bishops' 11 overall wins are still their most in a season since 2012 when that team had 21 wins.
