Volleyball Falls at Averett in 3

DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team fell 3-0 on the road at Averett Univ. (Va.) on Wednesday evening.

A competitive first set saw AU pull away late to take it 25-18 as Averett got 20 kills in the set as opposed to just nine for the Bishops.

AU then won 25-17 in the second set on 16 kills hitting .374 while Wesleyan hit .120.  The Bishops then got out to a great start in the third set racing out to a 9-6 lead. Unfortunately, the Lady Cougars would then go on a 12-5 run to lead 18-14 and then finished off the match 25-14.

AU improved to 8-4 with the win while NCWC fell to 2-8.

The Bishops were led by a trio of ladies recording 6 kills apiece. They included middle Lauren Weaver, outside hitter Callie Cline and right side hitter Michaela Seawell. Weaver hit .211 with 3 blocks and an ace while Seawell hit .172 with 9 digs, an assist and a block.

Freshman setter Sloan Martin also finished with 18 assists, 5 digs, and two kills while USA South Defensive Player of the Week Sam Butensky led the team with 16 digs along with an ace, and an assist. Junior right side Sydney Barnwell also had 4 kills, 2 digs and 2 blocks.

The Bishops will return to action on Friday to host Averett and Peace in a conference tri-match beginning at 11 AM from Everett Gym.
