Bishop Volleyball Sweeps Methodist

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team kept up their solid play at the end of their season by sweeping both matches from Methodist University at home on Saturday.

The Lady Bishops first swept the conference match-up 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-17) before ousting MU in four sets in the second match (25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20) as they have now won 5 of their past 7 matches improving to 5-9 on the year and 3-4 in the East Division.

MU got off to a quick start in the first set running out to an 8-2 lead before Wesleyan rallied going on an 11-2 run to take their first lead. The rest of the set would be back and forth until kills from middle Lauren Weaver and right side Michaela Seawell would close out the first set win for the Bishops.

Wesleyan then put on an attacking clinic in the second set hitting .400 with 16 kills and only 2 errors to snag that set 25-23 as well with Seawell and fellow right side Sydney Barnwell closing out the set with 2 kills apiece.

The Bishops then dominated the third set to win 25-17 hitting .281 on 14 kills.

Seawell and Weaver led the Bishops with 11 kills apiece while Seawell also recorded 13 digs for a double-double. Barnwell also added 9 kills, 4 digs, a block and an ace while senior OH Callie Cline had 7 kills, 4 digs, and 3 blocks. Senior right side Augusta Preston also recorded 10 digs with 4 kills while senior libero Sam Butensky had 18 digs, a kill, and an assist. Freshman setter Sloan Martin had another good game as well with 41 assists, 2 aces, 2 digs, and a block.

In the second match, Wesleyan would take the first set 25-22 on 13 kills hitting .171. MU then came back to win their first set of the day taking the second 25-22 holding off a Bishop rally in the process. Wesleyan won the third set 25-20 as they pulled away near the end of the closely contested set before keeping a healthy lead throughout the 4th set to grab the 25-20 win as well with 16 kills hitting .286.

Weaver led the Bishops this time with 16 kills and 9 total blocks including 5 solo while hitting 300.  Barnwell also played well again finishing with 9 kills, 8 digs, 4 blocks, and 2 aces while Seawell had 8 kills, 11 digs and two blocks in the win.

Martin would finish with 33 assists along with 5 kills and 7 digs as the setter while Butensky had 22 digs and 6 assists as the libero. Cline contributed 5 kills, 8 digs, 2 blocks and an ace while freshmen setter Desiree Walker and middle Mary Alice Butler also combined for 6 kills, 5 assists, and 2 digs. 

The Bishops will close out their season on Sunday by hosting NAIA foe St. Andrews at 1 PM.
