Wesleyan Volleyball Sweeps Conference Tri-Meet

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team won each of their conference matches on Saturday defeating Salem College in four sets before edging Greensboro in four as well in a hard-fought match to push their win total to 10 on the eyar so far, the earliest they reached ten wins in 10 years. 

NCWC 3, SALEM 1

In the first match of the day, Salem College came out playing well surprising the Bishops to take the first set 25-21 on 14 kills. Wesleyan then rallied back to take the second set 25-19 and dominated the third set 25-14 to take a 2-1 lead. NCWC had 10 kills and only 3 errors in set two while hitting .294 in set three with 13 kills. The Bishops and Spirits then had a competitive fourth set with Wesleyan rallying late to take it 28-26 with each team logging 14 kills apiece.

Senior middle Sydney Barnwell led the Bishops with 14 kills and 4 solo blocks hitting .357 while fellow middle hitter, senior Lauren Weaver registered 12 kills and 4 total blocks as well.

Senior outside hitter Michaela Seawell also played well putting up 9 kills and 11 digs hitting .226 while sophomore setter Sloan Martin posted 31 assists with 9 digs and 3 kills. Junior libero Kira Kristjanson also added 14 digs and an ace while senior right side Caitlin Leggett put down 6 kills.

NCWC 3, GREENSBORO 1

In their second match of the day, Wesleyan got off to a great start registering 16 kills in the first set while hitting .324 to take it 25-19. A mid set 7-0 serving run by senior DS Mary Catherine Davis proved to the difference. 

The Bishops then played very well in the second set recording 16 kills and hitting .333 while holding the Pride to just 9 kills to take it 25-21.

A very tight third and 4th sets then saw Greensboro edge the Bishops 25-23 in set three before Wesleyan rallied from 20-18 down and 22-21 in the 4th set to win it 25-23 on an Aubrey Nicholson kill.

The Bishosp totaled a season-high 60 kills in the match led by 15 from Barnwell who also hit .619 in the match with 2 aces, 3 digs, and 2 blocks. Fellow middle Weaver then added 16 kills with 3 blocks and 3 digs to hit .310.

Seawell also finished with double-digit kills at 13 and 11 digs for a double-double while Leggett added 9 kills and 5 digs as well. Martin played terrifiic again as the setter with 54 assists and 21 digs and 3 kills.

Wesleyan improves to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the USA South while dropping GC to 9-6 and 1-2.

The Bishops will remain home to host Methodist on Tuesday at 7 pm.
