Volleyball drops Both Matches at Tri-Meet

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College volleyball team traveled to Meredith College on Friday for two conference matches. The Bishops were defeated by Averett University (Va.) and Meredith College, losing 0-3 both matches.

AVERETT 3, NCWC 0 

The Bishops fell to the Cougars of Averett 20-25, 17-25, and 14-25 in their first match of the day. Senior middle hitter Sydney Barnwell led the offense with 6 kills and only 1 error, hitting at a clip of .385. Barnwell also tallied 2 aces, 3 digs, 2 block assists, and 1 assist for the match.

Senior outside hitter Michaela Seawell hit .238, earning 7 kills with 2 errors on 21 attacks. Seawell also earned 2 aces and an assist on offense, with 5 digs and a block assist defensively. Senior middle hitter also Lauren Weaver earned 6 kills, 2 block assists and a dig in the middle.

Junior libero Kira Kristjanson led the Bishop defense with 13 digs, followed by sophomore setter Sloan Martin with 7 digs. Martin also contributed 22 assists, 3 kills, and 2 block assists.

The Bishop offense was overpowered by the Cougars' (13-5, 5-3) hitters, Sarah Shropshire and Lauren Montren, who earned 19 of the team's 42 kills. 

MEREDITH 3, NCWC 0

The Bishops were next defeated by the Avenging Angels of Meredith College 0-3, losing 15-25, 22-25 and 8-25.

The defensive effort was led by Kristjanson with 14 digs. Setter Sloan Martin added 9 digs, and junior outside hitter Aubrey Nicholson earned 8 digs. Martin also went over 1,000 assists for her career in the match as she now has 1,072 total and 657 this season.

Weaver tallied 2 block assists and 1 dig on defense, with 4 kills at the net. Barnwell also earned 4 kills as well, while outside hitters Seawell and Nicholson contributed 6 and 5 kills respectively.

Seawell earned 2 aces and 4 digs in the back row as well, while Martin totaled 18 assists as the only setter. This was not enough for the Bishops to defeat the Angels (12-6, 6-2), who now stand in third place in conference play.

The Bishops, now 13-8 and 4-5 return to Raleigh on Wednesday to battle William Peace University to start the second round of conference play.
